So what is Resin Bound Stone?

One of the most popular home improvement projects that people undertake in the UK is creating or replacing a home driveway. Unfortunately, most people don’t know all the different options available to them, sometimes ending up with poor results. Using inappropriate or substandard materials will mean having to redo the driveway every few years. Below, we will take you through some of the benefits of using Resin Bound Stone for your outdoor space or Driveway.

Maintenance, lifespan, appearance and weather resistance are some of the key aspects to consider.

Two thirds of the 57,000 homes effected by flooding in 2007 was caused by surface water runoff – The Pitt Review suggests no one can afford to take this consideration lightly.

The days are gone when your driveway or outdoor space could be complete, for a discounted rate, by someone knocking on your door with tarmac or chippings. We all need to use reputable and professional contractors, offering drive and patio solutions that will stand the test of time. One of the most popular and flexible innovations of recent years has been the introduction of permeable Resin Bound Stone.

ResinBoundStoneHQ are at the forefront of supplying permeable Resin Bound Stone and driveways, successfully combining beauty with performance and safety. Below, are 10 reasons why Resin Bound Stone is such a superior material. Obviously you are welcome to use an alternative material, but just make sure it adheres to the following.

1. It’s beautiful & visually pleasing:
Resin Bound Stone is available in an expansive variety of colours and textures and is suitable for any type of project; new build or refurbishment and all styles of property; modern, traditional, listed or heritage. Other paving options have less design flexibility and can leave an industrial looking finish.  Not only is Resin Bound Stone decorative, it’s sustainable, practical and versatile, as you can see from these photos.
2. It’s resistant to weather:
Resin Bound Stone doesn’t soften in summer, freeze in winter or fade in sunlight.  Alternatives, such as asphalt, tend to soften in the heat (which can result in surface marks), may freeze in cold weather, and can also experience colour deterioration due to UV exposure.
3. It requires virtually no maintenance:
With Resin Bound Stone, there will be no loose stones to sweep and providing any established weed growth is removed before a Resin Bound Surface is laid, it is very unlikely, with regular cleaning, that any new weeds will grow. Regular cleaning also reduces any moss or algal growth.
4. It’s permeable/porous:
Resin Bound Stone is cold mixed on site using a process that ensures every particle of stone is completely covered in resin, thus forming a structurally stable 3D matrix. During the laying process, minute voids are created that allow water to drain through. This allows rain water to permeate through the surface to down below ground level. This helps regulate the effects of ‘heave’ and ‘shrinkage’ and also helps reduce standing water, surface water run-off and flash flooding as during heavy rainfall, impermeable surfaces generate large amounts of surface water which can overwhelm drains and rivers, causing immediate flooding.
5. It’s also SuDS compliant (Sustainable urban Drainage Systems):
SuDS is a water management standard introduced by the Environment Agency to help manage flood risk and water quality. Resin Bound Stone is SuDS compliant, because of its water permeability and natural qualities.
6. It’s very long lasting:
Resin Bound Stone is a strong, durable surface and as such, we are happy to guarantee all our work for 15 years. However, once this premier product is installed correctly and properly cared for, there is no reason to think why it won’t be still looming great after 25 years.
7. It is environmentally friendly:
As surface or rainwater seeps through permeable Resin Bound Stone and its underlying sub-base, it acts as a natural filter by reducing or removing impurities and pollutants caused by oils and metals. Conversely, when rainwater runs off an impermeable surface, it picks up pollutants as it flows into drains and natural water courses (rivers, lakes and oceans), creating an adverse effect on the biodiversity as well as potential health issues.
8. Faster installation with less mess:
It can be laid over existing surfaces such as asphalt and concrete, as well as directly onto a Type 3 sub-base with a reinforcing grid and separation membrane.
9. It requires no planning permission:
Since the 2008 government legislation, planning permission is not required for areas less than 5m² or if the new surface is permeable. Resin Bound Stone is permeable, so irrespective of the part of your property you intend to cover, no planning permission will be required. If you are in any doubt, we would always advise you to speak to your local planning department.
10. You choose a reputable installer:
As Resin Bound Stone is a relatively new product, it’s one of only a few trades without a governing body or trade association of its own. Your paving will be supplied and installed by us, and we are happy to provide references should you require them.
